How to Open or Start MS-Outlook in Safe Mode to Fix Errors?

In most of the forum discussions and Outlook’s related website, we read about the term safe mode (use safe mode). Most Microsoft Valuable Professional also suggests to start outlook in safe mode when someone encounters errors while using Outlook.

So, what is safe mode in Microsoft Outlook?


Most of us thinks that maybe it’s also a kind of another inbuilt utility like scanpst.exe (Inbox Repair Tool) which helps Outlook’s users to fix the corruption issues.

If you are talking about safe mode in the sense of an inbuilt utility, then my I will say a big NO.

I know, now you are in big confusion after reading the above section and just thinking that what is the difference between outlook safe mode vs normal mode?

Generally, Safe mode reduces the most of the functionality of any application by removing or disabling the non-core components of that particular application.
Similarly, starting Outlook in safe mode means running Microsoft Outlook in a safe manner without unnecessary plugins/add-ins, reading panes, extensions and any other customization files.

Outlook safe mode disable add ins and provides you an error free Outlook mode because most of the errors grow up due to these third party plug-ins or add-ins.

What Does Outlook Safe Mode do?

If you are not able to open Microsoft Outlook while starting it or getting an error when performing send/receive of emails or message, then most probably you should use safe mode command for Outlook.

Starting Outlook in safe mode just allow you to work safely without any add-ins or corrupted files. And, suddenly if you encounter any startup problem then open Outlook with safe mode and first disable the third party plug-ins or add-ins.

How to Start Microsoft Outlook in Safe Mode?

To run Outlook in safe mode, there is a need of safe mode command for Microsoft Outlook.


Outlook safe mode command:“outlook.exe /safe”


Follow the given path to start Outlook in safe mode:


For Windows XP:

Press “CTLR+R” and in the “Run” box, type “outlook.exe /safe” command.

For Windows 7 or Vista:
Type the “outlook.exe /safe” in the search box and click on ”Ok”.

For Windows 8:

Type “outlook.exe /safe in the start screen and press enter.
